Matrix Team Bio

North Park Matrix 2009 Girls

Congratulations to the North Park Matrix Girls 2009 team for winning the 2019 Presidio Cup Tournament Championship. The team followed their Championship Season competing in an eight team Tournament against many of the top finishers from the North and Central league. The road was hard fought with many thrilling and nail-biting moments. Saturday’s matches started with 0-0 tie and then a 1-0 win. Sunday’s games were played without our starting goalie. We won 2-0 and had to wait for the follow-on game to see if our fate would lead us to the Championship…the results went our way and we were in. The final game pitted us against a team we had beaten earlier in the season but they had added players to their roster for this tournament including one player with skillsets and abilities well outside the bell curve. She quickly scored on us within the first minute putting us on our heels right away. We rapidly adjusted marking her with our most tenacious players, Capri, who absolutely shut her down. We battled back to take a 2-1 lead powered by our top scorer, Clarissa, with back to back goals. They equalized by converting a questionable penalty kick and ended with a 2-2 draw taking the game to Penalty Kicks. Now the spotlight was on our substitute goalie, Talula. She blocked two well placed shots giving North Park a 3-2 advantage going into our fifth shooter, Sierra.  Sierra powered a shot towards the right post, the opposing goalie got fingers on it but the shot was too powerful and blasted into the back net finishing the game with a 4-2 win.

Meet The Coach

Chhem Young-Pen - Head Coach

Toni Young-Penn - Assistant Coach

Coach Toni is a US soccer D license candidate (course completed and licensing happening Feb. 2020). Currently, she is the head coach for the Girls 2005 NP Matrix team – playing in SDDA Flight II Presidio League (2019). This was a big jump for the team this season, coming from finishing near the top of the AA-A division in 2018. Even though we struggled to win this season, it was the right amount of challenge for our players and they were evenly matched. We plan to play in SDDA Flight II again for 2020.

Toni has a passion for soccer that was ignited in Wisconsin when she was 8 years old – playing on an all-boys team and since then she has been recruiting/encouraging and now coaching girls to play soccer! She is a former collegiate soccer player, a midfielder for University of Rochester, Div. III.

Her coaching style is player centered – positive, inclusive and supportive. Team cohesion is a critical focus and has been achieved through numerous team bonding events and activities including fun runs, beach soccer, Women’s National team viewing parties, potlucks, camping trips, hikes, etc. (see photos below). Furthermore, emphasis on player development involves not only soccer skills, but also psychosocial & emotional development.

Her goal is to be the best coach and role model possible for these young girls/women, in order for them to become great players and people!  And of course, to develop a love and passion for the game of soccer!
